Five Basic Tips For Starting a Family Health Tree

Did you know that genealogy could save someone's life?  How? By taking the research findings, tools and techniques from a family history project and turning it into a family health tree!  This leads us to our first tip...

Tip #1: Utilize the tools, techniques and information you use in your genealogy research, to aid in creating a family health and medical history diagram.

Irene Hurricane

Lots of diseases are passed on from generation to generation - they are hereditary.  Other diseases are not genetic in nature, but because your family and you probably share similar lifestyles and diets, then you all tend to get the same types of health problems and diseases.

By learning about the diseases you or others in your family are most likely to get, you can prevent them before they even get started!  This leads to the next tip...

Tip #2: Get Complete and Accurate Information!

Start gathering information about yourself first, then work up your family tree, going to your parents next, then grandparents, then aunts and uncles, etc.  On to the next tip...

Tip #3: Gather the Correct Information

You need health information such as: race, current age, relationships status, lifestyle, physical conditions, chronic conditions, etc.  Which leads to the next obvious tip...

Tip #4: Interview Your Relatives (Carefully!)

Start off by interviewing your family members just like you would for a genealogy project.  Be careful about how you ask certain health questions because some people are very sensitive to these questions.  They don't want to share much information - or any at all!  Medical and health data is a private matter - even between close family members.  Explain your purpose for asking; ask politely; choose your words carefully.

Tip #5: Use Your Information Sources

Whether you're an amateur genealogist or a professional, the sources you use are the same ones to help you find family medical information.  Use government documents and other vital records as well as personal anecdotes, journals, diaries - even photographs can contain hidden nuggets of information.

[Side Note: Now is a good time to learn about a "genogram" - what it is, how it can help you and your family, how to make one, etc.]

If you haven't figured it out by now - you are the one person most suited for creating your family health tree.  You are the one with the interest and desire for family history information.  You are the one willing to do the interviews and other research.  It only makes sense that you become the owner of this potentially life-saving project - you've got the skills and resources others may not have.

A family health tree is not a quick, easy project for you to tackle, but the benefits to you and your family may prove to be immeasurable.  I urge you to think about creating a family health tree the next time you're doing genealogy research.

Best wishes to you!

How to Get Hurricane Irene FEMA Contracts

Although Hurricane Irene has passed, the Eastern seaboard is still feeling her wrath in the storm's wake. Millions are still without power and damage from high winds and flooding is estimated at nearly Billion. FEMA is continuing to coordinate with federal, state, tribal and local government partners as well as private sector organizations in response to the disaster. Contractors are needed immediately to help FEMA in providing relief and supplies to affected families and start rebuilding damaged structures and roadways.

In order to qualify for FEMA contracts, you must be a registered vendor in Dun & Bradstreet, the Central Contractor Registration and ORCA. Your company must also complete a FEMA Vendor Profile.

Irene Hurricane

Many other departments and agencies are expected to take part in Hurricane Irene emergency response, including the Department of Energy and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Most of the United States Eastern Seaboard and surrounding states have been affected in some way by Hurricane Irene. Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia have all been affected to some degree by this massive storm system. To date, there have been at least 21 deaths reported throughout nine states. Vermont has experienced the worst flooding the state has faced since 1927. Many other regions experienced flood water and wind damage. Millions of households are without power. Approximately 2,500 residents of North Carolina's Hatteras Island were stranded after Highway 12 was severely damaged by the storm surge.

Vendors across many industries are urged to prepare for upcoming contracting opportunities to aid in disaster relief and rebuilding efforts. While there will certainly be a need for debris removal, construction services and emergency supplies, there will also be a demand for other goods and services as well. Businesses are urged to complete their registration as soon as possible in order to meet the needs of federal, state and local governments affected by the storm.

In order to complete registration quickly and start competing for Hurricane Irene FEMA contracts, vendors may consider using the services of a third party registration firm to assist them with their CCR registration, ORCA filing and FEMA Vendor Profile. To help them gain an edge over other vendors, contractors should also complete their Dynamic Small Business Profile and put together a capabilities statement outlining their company's strengths and experience.

FEMA contracts are just one of the many ways that business owners can provide aid and assistance to the families and businesses affected by disasters. In order to take advantage of this opportunity however, contractors should act quickly to complete the necessary registration and start bidding on available contracts.

The Pineapple Express - Natural Phenomenon

People along the western coast of North America are subjected to a wide range of weather meteorological phenomenon ranging from sun, clouds, rain, hail and snow usually in predictable patterns through seasons. However, with global warming, new, more frightening weather events have started to make a presence around the world ranging from torrential rainfalls to drought to hurricanes and tornadoes.

The Pacific Coast of North America is famed for its mild weather, rain and mountainous locales - recently however it has become home to an unwelcome visitor, the Pineapple Express. Also known as the Pineapple Connection, the Express is a meteorological phenomenon with much atmospheric moisture leading to heavy rainfall which is brought northwards from the Hawaiian Islands. This occurs only on the Pacific Coast of North America and is named as such for the Island's bounty of pineapples grown throughout the year.

Irene Hurricane

The Pineapple Express for many has been the source of inconvenience, wet weather over a span of a few days and danger. The sudden burst of heavy and continuous rain has burst dams, caused waterways to overflow and major floods such as the 1952 Central California Flooding, 1964 Pacific Northwest Flood and the 1996 Willamette Valley Flood which caused millions of dollars of damage and the loss of several lives. 2006 was an especially difficult year as areas ranging from Puget Sound along Washington and British Columbia, Canada to Alaska were hard hit with severe flooding and a record rainfall of over 350 millimeters.

The Pineapple Express is a strong southern branch of the Polar Jet stream with a frontal boundary moving at such a slow pace (or not even at all) with waves of low pressure emanating from it. These low pressure systems are the main culprits of heavy rainfall. Along the coastline there is large volumes of rainfall, however, in British Columbia, Canada, the higher elevations see high volumes of snowfall quickly followed by rapid melting at the warmer temperatures from the Hawaiian Islands are also brought with the Pineapple Express phenomenon.

Sometimes dropping a small volume of rainfall along the Pacific Coastline of North America, the Pineapple Express has also been known to double the average monthly rainfall of the area in a matter of days. Satellite photos of the Pineapple Express stretching across the western hemisphere is awe inspiring image of this impressive phenomenon which occurs only a few times a year.
