Weather Systems Are Created by the Movement of Air Fronts

The sun and atmosphere work together to create different climates. The air masses are moved by the changes in temperature. The disparate temperatures on the Earth's surface are caused by the different proximity of these areas to the sun. The equator is near the sun on the Earth's entire orbit.

This means that the surface on the Earth at the equator is hot, sunny and has many hours of daylight. The poles are the farthest from the sun and are the coldest and darkest areas of the planet when it is winter and sunny but still cold in what is considered summer there. The farther from the equator you get, the more seasonal the climates become. The climates in the middle of the equators and poles at what are called the middle latitudes are four season climates.

The air moves in masses caused by these irregular heating patterns and the boundaries between them are called fronts. The atmosphere is constantly moving the air around in an attempt to gain equilibrium, or equalized pressure between the warm and cool air. Air that moves also hits stable air and all the molecules mix together. When the cold air moves into warm air, it is called a cold front; a warm front comes from the opposite motion of warm air into cold.

Warm fronts rise above and on top of cold air. As the warm air cools the molecules form water vapor, and become clouds. First are the high cirrus clouds, then come the aptly named mid level followed by thick stratus clouds. Thick stratus clouds are the ones that sometimes cause rain and wind conditions.

When a cold front hits a warm air mass, the result can be more volatile. Convection occurs when the cold front sharply pushes the unstable warm air up. These winds create cumulus clouds and these clouds bring the thunderstorms. The upward motion also creates low pressure situations that make the wind blow harder. Along the cold air in front there will be the actual hard rain and sharp wind. The air behind it that has warmed a bit will simply bring rain. If the cold air takes over the warm air slowly, it becomes an occluded front and stratus clouds with light precipitation result. Stationary fronts occur when two very weak fronts meet and neither takes over the other. They simply sit and rain on the area until all of the air warms up or cools down and progresses on as a cold or warm front.

The oceanic regions of the Earth encompass 70% of the surface area. Climates in coastal areas are affected by the temperature of the seas, as saltwater is a very good conductor of both hot and cold temperatures. Great Britain is much warmer than most of the other land in its same latitude because of the warm Gulf Stream.

Belize Weather

Belize experiences only wet and dry seasons and they can be classified specifically by months. Actual weather conditions change every year, but once the pattern starts, weather becomes very predictable.

January

Belize experiences little rainfall during January. Only in the uplands of the Maya Mountains have rainfall of about nine to 10 inches. The northern area of the country may experience less than 10 inches of rain. In the southern area, Mayan bean crops are starting to mature, while the northern area sugar cane harvests are in full blossom.

February

February tends to have the most consistent of weather conditions in Belize. The winds are quite dry and blow steadily. Morning showers come from the coastlines--steady, but not very often. Rainfall falls to about six inches during this month in Toledo, while the rest of the country gets only about an inch.

March

The weather for March is quite similar to February except in the northern part of the country, which experiences much less rain, and sometimes, almost none. Winds start to die down during this month. Thunderstorms start to threaten the land over Maya Mountains. This is the month when farmers start to harvest their crops.

April

Rainy season starts during this month and harvest is in full swing.

May

The rainy season is in full force and almost every part of the country is assured of some rain fall. In some areas, the rain is stronger. This is also the stormy season, with the south experiencing more frequent rain than the north.

June

Rain continues to pour and becomes heavier during this month. Winds start to build up once again. With the consistency of the rain and strong sunshine, this is the best time to start growing the crops.

July

Rainfall is a bit less compared to June, but everything else with regard to weather conditions is quite similar to the previous month.

August

Rainfall starts to relent and the dry season starts. The dry weather conditions may last for only a few weeks.

September

September sees the winds start to die down. Evening and night rains are common.

October

Northern cold winds start to pick up and meet the warm winds of the tropics, bringing rain. Cooler days start during this month.

November

This is the coldest month of the season. Not only do the cold winds from the north blow the strongest, breeze from the coast comes in as well. Rain continues to fall.

December

December marks the start of dry season and planning starts for the planting season.

Iowa Weather Leaves Presidential Hopeful Precinct Walkers Out in the Cold

With the Weather a lot less than hospitable it looks like Presidential Candidates and their teams of precinct walkers and talkers are pretty much out of time. Massive amounts of snow and cold are now the norm, so unless the supporters wear Eskimo Clothing and snow shoes, its all over.

Many Iowan's laugh at all the warmer climate volunteers that come to their state to promote candidates, as they are not use to it and cannot handle it. Unfortunately, as funny as that is, it can be dangerous for folks as well, because those who are not use to freezing rain, ice and snow or blizzard like conditions can find themselves in car accidents, hypothermia and even freezing to death. It has happened in years past and it will most likely happen this year as well.

The temperatures will be into the teens and with wind-chill factor they can get to zero degrees, thus people coming from places like let's say Arkansas to support Mike Huckabee or Ron Paul will have a much tougher time than they think. Luckily for Mike Huckabee, he has a comfortable lead in first place, unfortunately for Ron Paul, he is far behind in last place and will most likely stay there, say political analysts.

Iowa can be do or die for underfunded Presidential Campaigns and even if a candidate wins big in Iowa, they are not normally the ones who go on to take the nomination, at least looking at statistics for the last 45 years. Time will tell, but if you are going out there to campaign, take a jacket - a thick one.

Wind Simulator in a Farm Silo - Study Extreme Weather - Make Energy

Is it possible to build a wind machine inside of a farm silo? Why you ask - well we could study Tornadoes, Hurricanes and perhaps we can make energy too. Using a Mini-Hurricane or Tornado model and maybe a little Geo-Thermal heat we might be able to power up a Wind Turbine of considerable size. After all some geo-thermal units work in a similar way already, we just want to give it some extra power.

Today we have CAD CAM virtual airflow simulators allowing for Hurricane criteria, wingtip vortices and even Tornado modeling. What can we learn by building an internal wind machine based on a Hurricane Model? Well maybe we can learn how to make Hurricanes and thus learn how to stop them too. Stopping a Hurricane would indeed be of supreme value for life and property. We could also help the environment as well.

Many believe we should not mess with Mother Nature, as once you change one thing, you will change something else, that could take us well into a problem well in the future. Life is a lot like a Hurricane, as it is born, grows and then dies out - in the process, it makes mistakes, does damage and it also does some good, by bringing much needed rainfall to vegetation and that helps maintain other life. Just like, we can improve our own lives thru the choices we make, we can improve things by understanding how it works and how hurricanes work too.

Simulated Hurricane or Tornado energy generation in an enclosed environment is a clean energy, which uses all natural physics of all that is available. Why should we put R and D money into such a scheme? Well because although we know so much about the destructive capabilities of these extreme weather events, we know so little as to how to harness this intense energy. We should be thinking here. What Are The Different Kinds Of Weather Fronts?

Weather fronts are where two air streams meet. These air steams have different temperatures and humidity. The warmer air, being less dense, rises up over the cooler air. The warm air expands and therefore cools as it rises. Colder air can hold on to less water vapour. The water condenses out of the atmosphere, forms clouds and eventually rain.

Stationary Front - a front that is not moving

When a warm or cold front stops moving, it becomes a stationary front. Once this boundary resumes its forward motion, it once again becomes a warm front or cold front.

Cold Front - transition zone from warm air to cold air

A cold front is defined as the transition zone where a cold air mass is replacing a warmer air mass. Cold fronts generally move from northwest to southeast. The air behind a cold front is noticeably colder and drier than the air ahead of it. When a cold front passes through, temperatures can drop more than 15 degrees within the first hour.

Warm Front - transition zone from cold air to warm air

A warm front is defined as the transition zone where a warm air mass is replacing a cold air mass. Warm fronts generally move from southwest to northeast and the air behind a warm front is warmer and moister than the air ahead of it. When a warm front passes through, the air becomes noticeably warmer and more humid than it was before.

Occluded Front - when a cold front overtakes a warm front

A developing cyclone typically has a preceding warm front (the lead edge of a warm moist air mass) and a faster moving cold front (the leading edge of a colder drier air mass wrapping around the storm). North of the warm front is a mass of cooler air that was in place before the storm even entered the region.

Dry Line - a moisture boundary

A dry line is a boundary that separates a moist air mass from a dry air mass. Also called a "Dew Point Front", sharp changes in dew point temperature can be observed across a dry line. Dry lines are most commonly found just east of the Rocky Mountains, separating a warm moist air mass to the east from a hot dry air mass to the west.

Whether You Like It Or Not Weather Will Surprise You

Have you ever seen snow in August? What does it look like? Is it wet or dry when it snows in such hot weather and how does that happen? Once a very, very long time ago, I was running around on a friend's property, doing exercise, and while running, I saw these flakes coming down from the sky. At first, since it was on the East Coast, I thought it was from some incinerator or some pollution problem. It took me a few minutes while running to realize that there were no large buildings around and there were no incinerators or pollution where I was running. Wow! Wow, again. So what were the flakes that floated from the sky so majestically that I felt like I was dreaming? Snow! Everyone looked around and said, snow? Is that snow? Snow in August? Wow!

To us, having seen snow only in winter, this was a totally awesome weather surprise, and a most welcome one. Ha, ha, it gave us the excuse to stop running around outside, exercizing. And, yes, it was really snow. So if you were me, what would your reaction be? What would you think if you were running around in fall or even in summer and all of a sudden it began snowing, really snowing?

I just stopped short, when I realized the manna from Heaven was indeed real snow. It almost reminded me of the other time that I was weather-shocked. Once a while back, I was walking and all of a sudden there were rocks all over. Clunk, clunk, and more clunk. I put my umbrelle up fast and then realized that the rocks were hail. Yes, hail. This hail was the size of golf balls. Wow, another weather surprise. So what was your most unusual weather surprises and where were you when that happened?

Advancement in Local Weather Radar Reports

Throughout history, many lives have been lost in the hands of the storm. Meteorologists and scientists is always looking for new ways to increase the warning time for these storms, with the hope of reducing the loss of human lives. In recent decades, the local weather radar advances have been made which allow greater precision in predicting the paths of these storms, meteorologists so that reports of bad weather and warnings earlier than in the previous issueYears.

Meteorologists and scientists have been able to successfully monitor named storms and tornadoes NEXRAD possible by an advanced tracking system (next generation radar). NEXRAD is a network of 158 Doppler radar detection time. The high resolution of the computer system takes readings on the amount of precipitation in the air, the movements in the clouds and the wind speed during a storm.

These readings are bounced on a computer weatherand a colorful image is rendered on the screen, giving meteorologists a clear picture of what kind of weather is on the horizon. This final image is what you see when the meteorologist breaks in with severe weather reports and warnings, usually with a description of how he maps weather radar.

In the case of severe weather, the meteorologist will relay the readings found by the local weather radar to the residents in the area. Most likely, on your television screen you will see a computer animated image of the approaching storm.

If the storm is severe enough, then the National Weather Service (NWS) will issue severe weather reports of severe thunderstorm warnings for your area. In that case, the storm captured on radar will have produced strong readable winds, detectable lightening, and some hail. Paying attention to the weather map is vital when severe weather is around.

On the television screen you will see several colors on the precipitation map, ranging from blue (the lightest) to black (the heaviest). If the colors for your specific area are yellow, take caution. If the colors range between orange and red, take cover immediately, as damaging winds and dangerous lightening have been reported.

When local weather radar in Atlanta, Georgia reported high winds, circular wind patterns, and large hail earlier this year, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning. Meteorologists in the area used the collected data to predict what path the storm would take, indicating which areas needed to be warned.

Thanks to this technology, most residents received the severe weather reports early enough to allow time to seek shelter before the storm hit. Paying attention to your local weather source during severe weather plays a vital role in your safety.
